Senior Data Engineer

Build the trusted data foundation that powers clinical decision-making, from study design to execution, while navigating a fast-moving AI landscape where your technical judgement shapes what comes next.

Your new role

As a Senior Data Engineer in our Data & AI Modeling department, you will create the scalable data foundation that enables insights across digital products and analytical teams supporting clinical study design, planning, forecasting and execution. This is a high-impact role where you will turn complex business opportunities into working data and applying sound engineering judgement in a rapidly evolving AI space.

You will be a senior contributor within a cross-functional product team, collaborating with data scientists, product owners, UX designers and developers. You will also work with heads of product suites and business owners and engage directly with end-user stakeholders whose feedback shapes how insights are delivered.

Your key responsibilities include:

  • Designing, building and operating a scalable data foundation supporting digital products, AI models and analytical teams across the clinical drug-development value chain
  • Integrating diverse internal and external data sources and transforming them into trusted, decision-ready data assets
  • Translating business needs and complex data challenges into practical, scalable solutions for analytical and AI-enabled use cases
  • Taking end-to-end ownership of data solutions, from architecture and implementation to testing, deployment, monitoring and continuous improvement
  • Ensuring the reliability, performance, security and ongoing operation of production data solutions
  • Contributing to data architecture, engineering standards, code reviews, technical discussions and knowledge sharing across teams
  • Exploring how AI-assisted development and agentic technologies can improve metadata discovery, data quality, developer productivity, pipeline operations and downstream analytical use
  • Applying sound technical judgement using proven, deterministic approaches where reliability is essential, and adopting AI-enabled capabilities where they create measurable value and meet requirements for security, transparency, compliance and human oversight

Your skills & qualifications

We're looking for a Senior Data Engineer who thrives on solving meaningful problems in a complex data landscape and brings both engineering depth and collaborative instinct.

You bring:

  • A master's degree or PhD in computer science, data science, engineering, mathematics, statistics, physics, economics or a related discipline
  • 3+ years of hands-on experience in data engineering or a closely related field, with demonstrated development of production-grade data solutions
  • Proficiency in SQL and Python and software-development standards such as Git-based workflows, automated testing, code reviews and CI/CD
  • Solid, hands-on experience with core data engineering disciplines: data modelling, ETL/ELT, transformation, orchestration, data warehousing or lakehouse architectures, data quality, metadata, lineage, observability and reliable production operations, including analysis and integration of diverse data sources
  • In-depth knowledge of cloud and data platforms such as Azure and Databricks; experience with frameworks such as dbt and MLFlow is an advantage
  • An understanding of data security, privacy and governance, with the ability to incorporate these considerations into technical designs
  • Curiosity about AI-assisted software development with a pragmatic approach to emerging technologies, including the ability to distinguish promising applications from approaches that are not sufficiently reliable, transparent or mature for production use
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities and the ability to navigate a complex data landscape
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills, including the ability to work effectively with both technical specialists and business stakeholders
  • Professional proficiency in English

Experience from the pharmaceutical, healthcare or another regulated industry is an advantage but not a requirement. You do not need to be an expert in every technology listed above, we value depth in core engineering disciplines, strong technical judgement and the ability to learn and adapt.

Your new department

In Research & Development, you'll be part of a unit that explores bold scientific ideas and advances them into clinical testing. We combine curiosity, AI tools, and human data to develop transformative therapies. Through collaboration and operational excellence, we shape and deliver an innovative pipeline to meet future patient needs.

The Data & AI Modeling department brings together data engineers and data scientists who work closely across the full development cycle, from raw data to digital products. We play a central role in developing solutions across the clinical drug-development and clinical-operations value chain. The department sits within Development Insights, where we develop a centralised suite of digital products addressing user and business needs across the clinical decision lifecycle, from early study design to country allocation and site selection, to study start-up and execution, as well as forecasting of resources and costs. Our products support users around the globe, and we work closely with stakeholders to understand their challenges and deliver trusted data.
