As part of the M&S Software Engineering team, you’ll be joining a well-loved historic brand, working on solutions that serve millions of loyal customers and thousands of colleagues. This role sits within our Warehouse Platform team, supporting the Fashion, Home & Beauty (FH&B) Supply Chain & Logistics sub-domain, a core part of M&S’s growth plans. You will help shape and improve the core warehouse technology that keeps site operations running, building robust, scalable solutions across Warehouse Management Systems (WMS) and related platforms. Working within a modern engineering environment, you’ll drive technical direction, improve reliability, reduce operational support demand over time, and deliver solutions with strong observability, meaningful metrics and best-in-class engineering practices.

We are looking for a passionate and experienced engineer who can combine deep technical expertise with strong leadership and mentoring capabilities, helping to shape the future of warehouse technology while supporting the growth and development of the wider engineering community.

What You'll Do

Your key accountabilities will include:

  • Develop, test and debug high-quality software solutions, setting the standard for engineering excellence and promoting best coding practices across the team.
  • Provide technical leadership on complex initiatives, ensuring solutions align with engineering strategy, technology standards and architectural principles.
  • Lead the design and implementation of scalable software solutions and third-party integrations, working closely with Architecture teams to deliver sustainable outcomes.
  • Conduct thorough code reviews to ensure maintainability, automated testing coverage, performance and adherence to engineering standards while fostering a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Collaborate closely with business stakeholders, product managers and engineers to understand challenges and design effective, scalable technology solutions.
  • Mentor and coach engineers at all levels, sharing expertise, enabling growth and supporting the development of high-performing engineering teams.
  • Drive operational excellence through monitoring, alerting, incident management and continuous service improvements, ensuring lessons learned are incorporated into future development.

 

Who You Are

Your skills and experience will include:

  • Proven track record in full-stack engineering, delivering high-performing, scalable user interfaces, backend systems and enterprise integrations.
  • Deep understanding of software engineering principles, patterns and best practices, with a focus on maintainable, adaptable and resilient solutions.
  • Strong knowledge of automated testing and performance testing approaches across unit, integration and end-to-end testing layers.
  • Proven experience implementing DevSecOps practices at scale across enterprise applications, embedding security and operational excellence throughout the software development lifecycle.
  • Technical expertise across a range of programming languages and technologies including Java, SQL, JavaScript and modern CI/CD tooling.
  • Experience designing and implementing cloud-native solutions with a strong focus on scalability, performance, observability and security.
  • Excellent communication, leadership and mentoring skills, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts and develop engineering capability across teams.

Desirable Experience

  • Knowledge of the retail domain, particularly Supply Chain and Logistics, including transportation, freight and haulier integrations, Distribution Centres, Retail and eCommerce operations.
  • Experience working with Warehouse Management Systems (WMS), including platforms such as Blue Yonder Dispatcher and related warehouse technologies.
  • Experience integrating third-party transport planning, transport execution and operational systems within large-scale enterprise environments.

  • Languages & Frameworks: Java (Spring Boot), .NET, Angular, AngularJS, React, TypeScript, Python, Playwright, Cucumber, JMeter and AI/ML technologies.
  • Cloud & Infrastructure: Azure IaaS and PaaS services, Docker, Kubernetes, Helm and Terraform.
  • Data & Messaging: Kafka (Confluent), IBM MQ/MQFTE and SFTP.
  • Databases: SQL Server on Azure.
  • API & Integration: Apigee, REST APIs and Windows Services.
  • Observability: Dynatrace, PagerDuty and Helix.
  • CI/CD & Quality: GitHub Actions, SonarQube, Semgrep, Snyk, Prisma, GitHub Advanced Security and Qualys.
