Are you excited by the idea of building intelligent systems that can reason, plan, and act autonomously? At ING, you’ll work at the forefront of Agentic AI — the next evolution of intelligent automation. This is your opportunity to help shape cutting‑edge AI capabilities and build backend systems that empower both our customers and colleagues. If you’re passionate about backend engineering and fascinated by AI-driven systems, this role is made for you.

The team

You will join a multidisciplinary, self-managing squad within ING’s Agentic AI initiative. Together, you design and build end-to-end solutions that have an immediate impact on ING’s digital platforms. The team embraces a strong engineering culture focused on innovation, craftsmanship, experimentation, and continuous learning.

You’ll collaborate closely with data scientists, ML engineers, and product experts to deliver AI-powered features that are scalable, robust, and safe — all within a culture that values openness, curiosity, and shared knowledge.

Roles and responsibilities

In this role, you will build and operate the backend foundation that enables ING’s next generation of agentic AI systems. Your responsibilities include:

  • Designing and developing scalable backend services using Java and Python.

  • Ensuring systems are reliable, secure, compliant, and ready for production at enterprise scale.
  • Collaborating with AI/ML experts to turn ideas into working, production-ready features.
  • Implementing monitoring, observability, and continuous improvements for AI-driven systems.
  • Working end to end within your squad, contributing from requirement refinement to production operations.

We hire smart people like you for your potential. Our biggest expectation is that you’ll stay curious. Keep learning. Take on responsibility. In return, we’ll back you to develop into an even more awesome version of yourself.

To succeed in this role, you bring:

  • Experience building backend applications with Java (Spring Boot) and Python.
  • Curiosity and affinity for working with LLMs, embeddings, or vector databases.
  • Ability to work with Google Cloud Platform, CI/CD pipelines, and containerized environments.
