Backend Engineer, Food Planning

About the role: What's in the Box

You will contribute to the work of the Food Systems Alliance, the team responsible for building the tools and systems that power menu planning across HelloFresh. Our mission is to help menu planners create the best possible menus for customers by combining data, automation, and decision-support tooling. We are currently consolidating multiple market-specific solutions into a unified global platform that will support menu planning across HelloFresh worldwide.

In this role, you'll help design and build internal products that enable smarter planning decisions, streamline operational workflows, and support the continued evolution of our menu planning ecosystem. You'll work at the intersection of software engineering, data, and product thinking to solve complex business problems that directly impact customer retention and satisfaction.

What you’ll do: The Recipe

• Design, build, and maintain backend services and internal products that support menu planning and operational decision-making.
• Contribute to the development of a global platform used by planners across multiple HelloFresh markets.
• Drive automation initiatives that improve the efficiency and scalability of planning processes.
• Collaborate closely with Product Managers, Engineers, Data teams, and business stakeholders to translate complex requirements into simple and reliable solutions.
• Work with large and interconnected datasets to support recommendation, planning, and optimization use cases.
• Contribute to code reviews, technical discussions, and engineering best practices within the team.
• Take ownership of problems from discovery through implementation and continuous improvement.

What you’ll bring: The Ingredients 

• The team primarily works with Go. Candidates from other backend ecosystems are welcome, provided you have some familiarity with Go and are eager to work with it as your primary language.
• Solid software engineering fundamentals, including API design, testing, debugging, and writing maintainable code.
• Comfort working with relational databases such as PostgreSQL and writing efficient SQL queries.
• Familiarity with cloud-native development and modern engineering tooling, such as Kubernetes, Terraform, CI/CD pipelines, and observability practices.
• A proactive, self-driven approach to problem solving and the ability to navigate ambiguity while driving solutions forward.
• Excellent communication skills and a collaborative approach when partnering with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Experience using AI-powered tools to enhance software development workflows and a curiosity for exploring how AI can improve engineering productivity.
• Any additional familiarity with React (or any other modern frontend technologies) is a plus.
