Role Overview
Eutelsat is seeking a Systems Engineer to design, define, coordinate and maintain the interfaces of future satellite communication systems and services build on or around IRIS².
The role spans the system end to end, including interfaces between elements across the user, space, ground, network, service and operations domains. These elements may include user equipment and terminals, NG-RAN, the 5G Core, terrestrial and satellite transport networks, satellite payloads, gateways, satellite and network control centres, service platforms, orchestration systems and operational support systems.
You will help ensure that independently designed and delivered system elements can interoperate as one end-to-end satellite communication service. This involves translating functional architecture, system requirements and functional chains into complete, consistent, implementable and verifiable interface requirements.
You will be responsible for ensuring the system interfaces match the system design, merging inputs from suppliers and internal SMEs with your own analysis. In general, you will aim to drive convergence on a common set of interface patterns and aim to reduce the complexity of the system.
Key Responsibilities
- Establish and maintain the interface register and interface matrix for the end-to-end system; identify interfaces, their boundaries and respective owners.
- Identify, in collaboration with subject matter experts, the applicable standards and reference architectures for each interface.
- Maintain interface assumptions, constraints, rationale, dependencies, decisions and open technical points.
- Translate functional chains, system requirements, operational use cases, design needs into clear, traceable and verifiable requirements.
- Define required information exchanges across control, user, and management-plane interfaces, together with the associated behaviour, sequencing, preconditions and expected responses for nominal operation, degraded modes, failure, recovery and re-establishment.
- Establish and maintain a unified system data model, protocols stacks addressing assumptions and connectivity constraints.
- Define interface performance, timing, availability, security in accordance with system design without prescribing supplier specific designs.
- Define interface versioning and compatibility requirements in accordance with system versions.
- Maintain the interface content of the system model and their allocation to requirements.
- Ensure the model remains authoritative and reflects the system design.
- Provide clear and accessible documentation of the model and interfaces to external and internal stakeholders.
- Chair and organise interface working groups with owners and relevant stakeholders, drive technical agreement, record decisions and track open points.
- Support definition of interface verification methods, acceptance criteria and required evidence with IVV teams.
Required Experience
- 5-10 years of relevant professional experience in end-to-end functional architecture, system architecture or systems engineering for satellite constellations, complex telecommunications or other distributed systems.
- Master’s degree in engineering, computer science or another technical discipline.
- Experience with systems engineering on large multi-supplier systems with demonstrable contribution to interfaces.
- Working knowledge of at least one standards family (3GPP, O-RAN, CCSDS, TMF,…).
- Experience chairing or leading technical discussions with external suppliers and partners.
- Fluent English, written to specification standard.
Desirable Experience
- Experience on space, telecom or defence programmes with formal review lifecycles (SRR/PDR/CDR).
- Understanding of IP networking and common higher layer software communications protocols.
- Understanding of satellite constellation mission and fleet management.
- Ground segment, satellite internet services or NTN experience.
- Transport network, 5G Core or RAN experience.
- Experience with data modelling and schema design.
- Exposure to security architectures, in particular trust boundaries between domains.
- Familiarity with model-based systems engineering, requirements-management tools or architecture-modelling tools.
Candidate Profile
You are a technically rigorous engineer who can work across several engineering domains while maintaining focus on the purpose and behaviour of the end-to-end system.
You are able to:
- Lead structured technical discussions without relying on formal authority and facilitate agreement between the owners of interconnected system elements.
- Work effectively across cultural, organisational, disciplinary and supplier boundaries.
- Identify ambiguity, inconsistency and incomplete technical definitions, and drive complex interface issues towards a clear decision or documented resolution path.
- Distinguish system requirements from implementation preferences and supplier design proposals.
- Communicate effectively with both specialist and non-specialist stakeholders, explaining interface decisions, dependencies, assumptions and risks clearly.
- Balance technical rigour with programme constraints, delivery priorities and available evidence, maintaining end-to-end consistency while several teams or suppliers develop different parts of the system in parallel.
