ZEISS Semiconductor Manufacturing Technology

Enabler for smaller, more powerful, and more energy-efficient microchips

Working for tomorrow today.

Around 80 percent of all microchips worldwide are produced using ZEISS technologies. As the centerpiece of every electronically controlled system, they have become an integral part of our everyday lives – whether in smartphones, smart homes or smart factories. ZEISS is a technology leader in the field of semiconductor manufacturing equipment. With high-precision lithography optics, photomask systems and process control solutions, ZEISS enables the production of ever smaller, increasingly powerful, and more energy-efficient microchips, and thus plays a pivotal role in the age of micro- and nanoelectronics.

In this role, you will develop intelligent algorithms that make mechanical tolerances manageable and thereby enable the exceptional precision of ZEISS lithography systems. You will work at the intersection of software, physics, and data analysis, translating process knowledge into powerful robust mathematical software solutions. Together with interdisciplinary teams, you will take your ideas from initial concept to deployment ready solutions, while communicating results clearly and presenting them convincingly to stakeholders.

Your Role

  • You combine software engineering, physics, and data science to solve complex challenges in high-precision lithography systems.

  • You will develop advanced adjustment and assembly algorithms for mechanical tolerance analysis and error propagation analysis enabling the highest levels of accuracy in our lithography systems.

  • You will contribute to an existing software ecosystem with modern development techniques.

  • By translating process knowledge into mathematical software frameworks, you strengthen SMT’s internal capabilities and drive sustainable technical excellence.

  • In close collaboration with interdisciplinary teams, you communicate results effectively and present them convincingly to external stakeholders.

  • You will develop concepts, test them, compile the team's findings, present the results, and refine the concepts until they are ready for decision-making.

Your Profile

  • Technical degree (mechanical/electrical/industrial engineering, mechatronics, physics, mathematics, computer science, or similar), ideally with a Ph.D. in a relevant field or significant professional experience in tolerance analysis, simulation, or scientific computing.

  • Strong background in the mathematical foundations especially in rigid body transformations (e.g. robotics, …) and related computational fields from optimization and numerical methods to graph algorithms.

  • Proven ability to rapidly develop and evolve software prototypes into robust working solutions using established software engineering practices, including OOP and design patterns, Git-based collaboration, automated testing, etc. Ideally with experience in a prototyping languages like Matlab or Python.

  • Basic knowledge of quality data (CMMs, Calypso, …), with familiarity in measurement processes is a plus.

  • Strong analytical skills: accustomed to dealing with complex issues and systems.

  • You feel comfortable presenting your results and progressing as a team; as well as working across departments and reconciling requirements from multiple interfaces.

  • Strong Communication Skills: you can explain complex technical concepts to diverse audiences (engineers, managers, stakeholders), you foster an excellent culture of communication and enjoy both working independently and as part of a team.

  • Fluent in English and German (both written and spoken).
