This is Adyen

Adyen provides payments, data, and financial products in a single solution for customers like Meta, Uber, H&M, and Microsoft - making us the financial technology platform of choice. At Adyen, everything we do is engineered for ambition.

For our teams, we create an environment with opportunities for our people to succeed, backed by the culture and support to ensure they are enabled to truly own their careers. We are motivated individuals who tackle unique technical challenges at scale and solve them as a team. Together, we deliver innovative and ethical solutions that help businesses achieve their ambitions faster.

Infrastructure Engineer (RDS)

We’re looking for a versatile Infrastructure Engineer to join our Platform Engineering organization and help shape the resilience, performance, and developer experience of Adyen’s database platform. In 2025, this platform supports payments and money movement totaling over a trillion euros - the work you do will have a real, high-stakes impact.

Your mission: to build our internal Database-as-a-Service (DBaaS) offering. You’ll join the Relational Databases Service (RDS) team, where we’re creating an internal cloud platform that provides PostgreSQL to product teams across the company. You’ll build the abstraction layer, automation, and tooling that lets engineers provision, scale, and operate stateful systems with minimal friction. Our DBaaS runs on OpenStack VM clusters, and you’ll help deliver capabilities like regional high availability, automated failover, intelligent connection pooling, and seamless query routing. You’ll work across networking, compute, and storage, designing systems that detect failures and recover automatically with minimal downtime.

What you’ll do:

  • Build the Platform: Design and develop the internal DBaaS offering. You will write code (Go/Python) to automate the entire lifecycle of a database , from provisioning and connection pooling to automated failover and upgrades.
  • Architect for Reliability: Ensure high availability and disaster recovery are baked into the design. You will solve complex problems regarding regional HA, query routing, and storage replication on top of both Bare Metal and OpenStack.
  • Deep Dive & Debug: Investigate complex performance bottlenecks at the kernel, network, or database level. You will analyze system metrics, traces, and logs to identify root causes in a distributed environment.
  • Developer Experience: Treat our internal product teams as your customers. You will build tooling that abstracts the complexity of large-scale stateful systems, allowing product engineers to focus on business logic.
  • Operational Excellence: Participate in the on-call rotation, not just to fix fires, but to learn from them and remove/reduce the toil.

Who you are:

  • A Systems Thinker: You have a deep understanding of Linux (networking, file systems, kernel tuning) and distributed systems principles. You understand what happens when a stateful service fails in a distributed environment.
  • A Software Engineer: You are proficient in Go or Python. You don’t just write scripts, you write clean, testable, maintainable code to build infrastructure automation and internal tools.
  • A Database Enthusiast: You understand the operational challenges of running databases (PostgreSQL, or similar) at scale.
  • Problem Solver: You are proactive. You prefer performing root-cause analysis and building permanent fixes over applying temporary patches.
  • Collaborative: You can communicate complex infrastructure concepts to application engineers and work closely with Compute, Networking, and Storage teams.

Bonus points for:

  • Experience building Operators or custom controllers for Kubernetes.
  • Interest on of PostgreSQL internals
  • Experience using  OpenStack or managing server  fleets.
  • Familiarity with Infrastructure-as-Code (Temporal, Ansible, Puppet) and Secret Management (Vault).
  • Experience with observability at scale (Prometheus, Grafana, ELK).
